Nanotechnology

Nanotechnology is a science, engineering, and technology conducted at a scale of about 1 to 100 nanometers which provides new materials viz. nanoparticles, nanofibers, etc. with many potential applications in pharmaceutical research and clinical medicine. The nanotechnology lab focuses on the development of novel drug delivery systems with nanoparticles, polymer nanofibers, nanocomposites for CNS disorders, wound healing, bone regeneration, dentin regeneration etc.

We are developing thermosensitive insitu gelling systems for drug delivery for bone pathologies. In collaboration with Vishnu Dental College, Bhimavaram the nanomaterials are tailor-made to meet the clinical problems such as dental caries, gingival and periodontal pathologies.

Drug Discovery – Medicinal Chemistry

We all are aware of resistance development by various bacteria/fungi/protozoa’s. It has posed challenges and threat to mankind in the recent past. This resistance development by microorganisms has disposed many of the currently available drugs.

Further due to industrial/vehicular pollution and change of life style, the rate of asthma is increasing day by day causing the major economic crunch to the society not only nationally but also globally.

In this context, we in Med. Chem. Dept., at SVCP have designed and synthesized NCE’s (Novel Chemical Entities) targeting various infectious diseases caused by drug resistant/susceptible species of Mycobacterium tuberculi, Plasmodium falciparum etc and also developing chemical moieties targeting P1 receptors to treat asthmatic condition. Three of the NCE’s developed at our labs are in the final stages of the grant of patents.

One of the unique features of our department is strong research collaborations with various institutes like Uni-Bonn, Uni-Wuerzberg, NIH-Bethesda, Lousonia State Univ., National Institute for Malarial Research etc.

Drug Discovery – Natural Products

Natural products possess enormous structural and chemical diversity that cannot be matched by any synthetic libraries of small molecules and continue to inspire novel discoveries in chemistry, biology, and medicine. They are evolutionarily optimized as drug-like molecules and remain the best sources of drugs and drug leads. Application of molecular biological techniques is increasing the availability of novel compounds that can be conveniently produced in bacteria or yeasts, and combinatorial chemistry approaches are being based on natural product scaffolds to create screening libraries that closely resemble drug-like compounds.

In this context, we isolated, characterized and screened for biological activities from Turnera ulmifolia, Turnera ulmifolia, Fagonia cretica, Limonia acidissima etc. We are also developing analytical methods on selected natural products and validate them.

Drug Discovery - Pharmacology

Drug discovery and development is an exciting and challenging process wherein success is possible only when there is novel hypothesis, excellent planning, perfect execution and a bit of luck for getting a drug approved for clinical use. Academic institutes have been successful in generating new hypotheses and validating the hypothesis with the limited resources. These inventions led to the creation of spin-off companies with an objective to further refining those hypotheses to make viable products. The pharmacology department faculty is relentlessly striving to generate new hypotheses and validate them with suitable test system. The faculty is focusing on the discovery of novel agents from both synthetic and natural sources for the treatment of neurological disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, metabolic disorders, autoimmune disorders, respiratory disorders etc.

Analytical Method Developments

The pharmaceutical products are playing foremost role in the health care system and become a part of day to day life as common commodity. In order to accomplish the intended purpose, the medicines are required to be ideal in terms of its identity, purity, safety and efficacy. The analytical techniques are emerged based on the physico-chemical properties of the drug substance and based on the property being measured for its qualitative and quantitative assessment. Many sophisticated analytical instruments are elicited, due to rapid expansion in the electronic and computational technologies.
